Helicopter builder Sikorsky built the Sea King in 1957, beginning a long career as a submarine hunter-killer, then diversifying into search and rescue, as well as executive transport. Designated the SH-3, the Sea King was designed for shipboard operation with folding rotor blades, as well as amphibious operation. Weapons capability was equally diverse, from torpedoes and missiles, to sonobouys for sub hunting. The F-111 was designed in an era where "cost was not an issue" - resulting in an aircraft featuring pioneering and expensive technologies like variable-geometry wings, afterburning turbofan engines and terrain-following radar. So advanced was the F-111 that it inspired the fictional aircraft in the "Thunderbirds" series as well as real Soviet swing-wing designs. Easily the most famous of all World War I planes, the Fokker Dreidecker (triplane), was designed by Reinhold Platz and built by Fokker-Flugzeugwerke as a response to the success of the British Sopwith Triplane. Used to deadly effect by Manfred von Richthofen (aka "The Red Baron"), the plane gained notoriety beyond what was actually a very frail and unstable aircraft. Designed by Dutch engineer Anthony Fokker, the Eindecker or "monoplane" in English, was the first plane to be fitted with a gun/propeller synchronizer gear which allowed its machine gun to fire thru the propeller arc. So advanced was this feature that it started the "Fokker Scourge" where the Allied planes became "Fokker Fodder" for the early German Aces. Although the Boeing B-17 was not the most capable bomber in terms of bomb load and performance, it was the darling of the bomber air crews due to its legendary resistance to battle damage. The B-17 bristled with defensive guns - much to the crews' delight - earning it the title "Flying Fortress". The "Stratofortress" or BUFF (Big Ugly Fat Fellow) as its called by the Air Force, first entered operations in 1955 and is projected to become the longest operational aircraft of all time due to the Air Force's intention to keep the B-52 in service until 2040. This super scale PRE-Flight model of the B-52 has moveable control surfaces and unique retractable landing gear, which, like the original's, can pivot 20 degrees outward. Called "The Plane that Won the War", the Boeing B-29 Superfortress was one of the most advanced bombers of its time - featuring innovations like remote-controlled gun turrets and a fully pressurized cabin. So advanced was its design that it was used long after its first flight in 1942 - it was only retired from service in the 1960s. It was also copied down to the rivets by the Soviet Union and called the Tupolev Tu-4. This super scale PRE-Flight model of the B-29 is composed of over 107,000 polygons, and has full moveable control surfaces, retractable landing gear, revolving gun turrets (controlled by the rudder channel), detailed interior visible in the aircraft views, and special reflective paint and markings of "Enola Gay". This large scale PRE-Flight model of the Staggerwing is composed of over 130,000 polygons, and has full moveable control surfaces, retractable main and wheel landing gears, finely detailed radial engine and even a detailed, cream leather interior. This PRE-Flight model of the Triebflugel has an operating rotor, animated flame at the ramjet exhausts and even "3D" sound coming from the rotating engines. Flying the model is similar to flying a helicopter, up to the point where enough forward speed enables the model to fly more like a conventional aircraft. This new type Panoramic Photoreal Scenery is composed of over 18 MB (unzipped) of high resolution photographic images of the actual flying field. Look straight up to view beautiful clouds and down to follow the shadow of your model on the image of actual grass. This model of the military version of the DC-3 is programmed to disgorge an unlimited number of paratroopers on your flying field. Program your Transmitter on channel _Aux3 or (using the keyboard controls) press the "T" key to start dropping, and "Y" to stop. The rate is entirely up to you. You can Pull Down Menu Model, Quick Edit then click the Parachutes Tab and put in how many parachutes per second you want to drop. From 1 (Paratroopers Picnic) to 3 (D-Day in Europe!) per second. The plane has the usual moveable controls and working gear. Includes intructions on how to do your own paint job. Armed to the teeth with machine guns, grenade launchers and rockets, the Chinook helicopters were always a welcome site to the US Armed Forces in Vietnam. The "Easy Money" was the only ACH-47A to survive the Vietnam War. Includes intructions on how to do your own paint job. The Lancaster was the most successful bomber used by the Royal Air Force and the Royal Canadian Air Force in WWII. Able to carry almost its own weight of fuel and bombs, it was the only bomber capable of carrying the "Grand Slam" - a 22,000 pound bomb, and the "Dam Buster" spinning bomb. This model features very high detail: over 30 glass windows and canopies, retractable gear, moveable control surfaces, rotating turret (use rudder to operate), detailed cockpit, showing seats, and more. In 1917, the Royal Aircraft Factory produced the SE5 biplane - the first British fighter to be armed with 2 guns. On the 4th of October the year 2004, aviation and space history was made as Brian Binnie, a 51-year-old former navy pilot, piloted Scaled Composite's SpaceShipOne - the first commercial spaceship. An hour after landing, Burt Rutan - owner of Scaled Composites claimed the $10 million X Prize purse offered by Ansari. The feat is likened to Lindbergh claiming the $25,000 Orteig Prize after making his solo transatlantic flight in 1927. Like the Spirit of St. Louis, SpaceShipOne will herald a new, golden age where space flights will become as routine as air travel is today. Bright yellow, small, cute, and christened "The City of Springfield", you'd half expect Bart Simpson (from "The Simpsons" cartoon) as the pilot. The Gee Bee model Z was in fact, a racing plane that won every race it ever entered until a fatal accident in a speed record attempt ended its brilliant carreer. A mere 15 feet (4.57m) in wingspan but powered by a 750hp Wasp Sr. R-1340 engine, the Model Z was the predecessor of the R-1 that Jimmy Doolittle made famous. This model of the "Z" boasts over 25,000 polygons of detail: realistic Wasp engine, cooling vents ,landing gear, wire bracing, and distinct yellow paint scheme. This Lockheed F-16 has an incredible count of over 45,000 polygons making it one of the most detailed flying models available. It features a smoke trail generator (for skywriting and aerobatics) and a vulcan cannon which fires visible tracer rounds and actually puffs smoke and makes that awesome sound. The "tricycle" landing gear is fully operational, the afterburner exhaust flame is animated, and lights flash. This photorealistic scenery of a small field in Melbourne is achieved by using actual photos, seamlessly stiched together into a full 360-degree view (up, down, left, and right). The physics allow full control of the exhaust vectoring from 0(level flight) to 90(hover) degrees. Designed by Burt Rutan of Scaled Composites, SpaceShipOne is carried aloft by WhiteKnight and is released after which it fires its rocket engine to boost itself to over 100km. In this 1/4th scale model, you take off as the WhiteKnight carrying SpaceShipOne as a conventional plane. Then press 'X' to release, then 'B' to fire the rocket booster on SpaceShipOne (assume a high-angle attitude first). My personal best is an altitude of 3800 meters before gliding down to land on the original runway where you took off. This is after a release from 100 meters without changing the default rocket settings. Booster rocket characteristics can be changed in Menu Model, Quick Edit, Engine Tab. Modifications/corrections to Model Flight Characteristics These modifications address some issues in the physics of the models found in version 1.8 of PRE-Flight. Models affected : Pitts Biplanes, Ergo helis, Cessna trainer, and Sailplane. Body air friction has been added, and rotor friction in the helicopter rotor has been corrected.
